This is a project-based assessment and will be assessing you on your knowledge and performance of the unit. This assessment is in four parts: 1. Plan to install network peripherals 2. Install network printer 3. Connect and share a storage device 4. Demonstrate peripheral devices. Submission instructions |
When you have completed this assessment, submit it online for marking by your assessor. What do I need to do to achieve a satisfactory result? |
To achieve a satisfactory result for this assessment all questions must be answered correctly and all items in the Assessment Checklist and Observation Checklists must be marked Satisfactory. |
Assessment conditions |
Assessment conditions will replicate the workplace, including noise levels, production flow, interruptions and time variances. Make sure there is background noise, such as music for example, and interruptions while you are completing this assessment. |
What do I need to provide? |
· Computer, internet and login details. · A person, such as another colleague, to play the role of a user. · Peripherals for installation. · A video recording device, such as a smartphone to record your demonstration to a user. · Installation of a virtual machine using the Instructions_for_virtual_machine.docx in the resource folder. · an external hard drive or USB drive, which can be formatted, renamed and shared on a network. |

Reasonable adjustment |

Assessment feedback, review or appeals |
In accordance with the TAFE NSW policy Manage Assessment Appeals, all students have the right to appeal an assessment decision in relation to how the assessment was conducted and the outcome of the assessment. Appeals must be lodged within 14 working days of the formal notification of the result of the assessment. If you would like to request a review of your results or if you have any concerns about your results, contact your Teacher or Head Teacher. Specific task instructions
You currently work for Red Opal Innovations in the IT section. The Network Manager, Terrence Stewart, has asked you to install and configure a printer (HP Colour LaserJet E87660) and an external hard drive shared on the network.
Download the resource folder which contains Instructions for a virtual machine and a test document referred to in Parts 2 and 3 of the assessment.
Part 1: Plan to install network peripherals
Before installing the peripherals, you need to plan where they’ll be located and demonstrate your knowledge of network peripherals.
- Outline at least three recommendations for locating the required peripherals, considering work health and safety (WHS) standards. Things to consider may include:
- suitable environmental conditions for the equipment and accessories
- safety precautions when connecting to electricity and moving the equipment.
Minimum 100 words
- Summarise the industry standards that are expected of a peripheral device to enable it to be added to a network.
Minimum 40 words
- Match the following network peripherals to their names (in the table below the images) by writing its letter next to the correct name, in the Device letter Write a description of each peripheral in the Description column (75-125 words total).

Part 2: Install network printer
The next step is to install a network printer onto the system, as well as document the installation. You will complete this using a virtual machine (VM).
Follow the Instructions_for_virtual_machine.pdf in the resource folder to set up the VM.
- You are required to record your completion of the tasks using screenshots and submit them as evidence for this assessment.
When taking screenshots:
- Use the Snipping Tool (Windows), print screen or a video screen capture tool, such as Skype, to record your actions.
- To show you are using your machine, use Sticky Notes (Windows) or an equivalent tool to record your name and ensure you capture the sticky note in the screen shot or recording.
- For each of the tasks 1 to 9 below, take a screenshot of the process and a screenshot of the final setting. Place the screenshots into the box following each activity.
- Your assessor will complete Observation checklist 1. Check the observation checklist to ensure that you’ve covered all the required tasks.
Tasks
You will be granting permissions to the Guest user, so once you have installed your virtual machine, you will need to make sure this is enabled, as follows:
- Click on the Start icon and search for Computer Management.
- Under Local Users and Groups, click Users.
- Double-click Guest to open Properties.
- Make sure Account is disabled is not checked.
- Exit the virtual machine and restart it.
Complete the following tasks:
- Install the Print Server.
- Install the following printer as a network printer with manual settings, according to the operating system vendor approved method:
- Port: FILE: (Print to File)
- Model of printer: HP Universal Printing PCL 6 (this is a universal driver used for the HP Color LaserJet E87660)
- Printer name: Use an abbreviation for the printer name that indicates:
- it belongs to Red Opal Innovations Multimedia Department
- it’s the second printer in that department
- Ensure the printer is shared on the network
- Location: ROI Multimedia Department
- Comment: Main printer for ROI Multimedia
- Do not set as the default printer
- Print a test page (this will save a .prn file – name it Testpage1).
- Assign a priority level of 20 to this printer.
- Add the following printer accessories and upgrades for this printer:
- Printer auto select: A4
- Manual Feed: Envelope DL
- Tray 1: A4
- Tray 2: A3
- Duplex Unit (for 2-sided Printing): Installed
- Accessory Output Bin: Single Output Bin
- Printer Hard Disk: Installed
- Configure access to the printer as follows:
- Ensure the Everyone account has the following security permissions:
- Print (Allow)
- Manage Documents (Allow).

- Configure the printer so that usage logs are enabled.
- Create a filter on your printer to send an email notification when it’s low on toner. Use the following settings:
- Recipient email address: [Your TAFE email address]
- Sender email address: [Your teacher’s email address]
- SMTP server: mail.tafensw.edu.au
- Message: [your printer name] is low on toner.
Send a Test email to make sure it works and include a screenshot of the email.
- Create a cost centre for the Multimedia Department. Use a name and code that indicates:
- it applies to Red Opal Innovations Multimedia Department
- it is the second cost centre.
- Document the installation, configuration and testing of the installation using the Installation Completion form (ROI_Installation_comp.docx).
Part 3: Connect and share a storage device
Next, you will need to connect and share a storage device. This can be an external hard drive or a USB drive.
When taking screenshots:
- Use the Snipping Tool (Windows) or print screen to record your actions.
- To show this is your machine, use Sticky Notes (Windows) or an equivalent tool to record your name and ensure you capture the sticky note in the screen shot.

Tasks
- Connect your storage device and perform the following according to the operating system vendor approved method:
- Configure it correctly to enable sharing.
- Share the device.
- Name the storage device by using an abbreviation that indicates:
- it belongs to Red Opal Innovations Accounts Department
- it is the first shared drive in that department.
- Configure security for your storage device so that the Guest user has Read access only.
- Copy the docx file onto your storage device. You’ll need to do this outside of the virtual machine, so you’ll need to exit, copy, then restart the virtual machine. Open the test document in Notepad and print it to the networked printer. This will save a .prn file – name it as Testpage2.
- Document the installation, configuration and testing of the installation using the Installation Completion form (ROI_Installation_comp.docx).
Part 4: Demonstrate peripheral devices
You need to demonstrate to a user how to use the peripherals that you’ve installed on the network in a demonstration of 5-10 minutes.
Prepare for your demonstration by organising:
- a person, such as another student, to act as the user
- your video recording device and set up.
Follow the Video recording instructions (pdf) to record and submit your video.
You are encouraged to rehearse the demonstration before completing the assessment.
During the meeting, make sure that you:
- use effective listening and questioning techniques to confirm understanding
- use specific and relevant language suitable to the audience
- address cultural differences in a work environment.
Role play participants:
- User — the person acting in this role
- ROI employee — you.
Demonstrate to the user how to do the following tasks:
- Print a document to the printer.
- Access and use one of the printing shortcuts you created.
- Map the network drive.
