TAEASS402B Assess Competence Sample Assignment

Assessment One – Written Questions

For each question, you must record your response in the space provided.

Q1a. E xplain what is meant by the term ‘competency-based assessment’.

Competency based assessment is a process where an assessor works with a trainee to collect evidence of competence, using the benchmarks provided by the unit standards that comprise the national qualifications. It is not about passing or failing a candidate and evidence collection is more than just setting a test.

Q1b. Why is this form of assessment desirable in the VET system?

This form of assessment is desirable in the vocational education system as it directly applies to real workplace skills and knowledge.

Q2. Briefly explain the difference between criterion-based and norm-referenced assessment.

Norm-referenced assessment involves ranking a learner against their peers once a task has been completed whereas criterion-based assessment involves measuring the learner’s performance against a prescribed benchmark. The candidate can either receive a competent or not yet competent outcome.

Q3. Why are competency standards used as the benchmark for assessing a candidate for a nationally recognised qualification?

It is fundamental that competency standards are used with trainees to guarantee that the skills and knowledge being learnt meet industry, legal and organisational requirements. These verified competencies are a proven record of tasks performed effectively and efficiently and most importantly, safely.

Q4. What parts of a unit of competency should you refer to in order to cover the assessment requirements? List each part and state why it must be met in terms of the rules of evidence.

Pre-requisites –

2

Knowledge evidence - describe what a learner must demonstrate in order to be considered competent. Assessment conditions describe the conditions under which a learner must demonstrate this, including any specific requirements for resources, trainers and assessors and the context for assessment.
