Assessment 2 Instructions

Guidelines

The purpose of this assessment is to develop your skills in writing for businesses purposes, while analysing a contemporary issue/trend in the workplace.

The Context

For the purpose of this assessment, you are to use the context of a recent Business Graduate. Your manager has explained their their expectation that you keep yourself abreast of current thinking and emerging practices and has shred an article from a business journal which they have quickly scanned.

You have a team planning day approaching and your manager has indicated they would like you to discuss the article with the broader team as part of that day. As a lead up to the team day your Manager has asked you to send your colleagues a summary of the article with some initial thinking on the key point you believe are relevant to your organisation and what you plan to discuss at the team planning day.

The Critical Tasks

You have been asked to review the article assigned and prepare a Memo Report that provides

  1. summary of the key points; and
  2. your recommendations on a presentation/agenda item for the planning day.

Purpose of Memo Report

Your manager would like you to circulate the Memo Report to your colleagues as pre-reading so they are familiar with the concept of future proofing and why it should be a topic discussion at the planning day.

Your Audience

Although you do not know your colleagues well, you do know they come from a diverse range of backgrounds, are strategic (they like to discuss the why as well as the how) and they are pragmatic, so you are going to have to be informative, persuasive and relevant. They are also busy people, so you know you will need to be to the point. You manager has suggested that you should be aiming to keep the Memo Report to no more than 3/4 pages, they have suggested that you should use no more than 1500 words.

This task has two major elements:

1. Identification of the Contemporary Management Issus - The Concept of Future Proofing Organisations and in particular the increased focus on Social Licence

The first component of this assessment will help you become familiar with the types of business journals that professionals use to stay connected to current issues and emerging business practices. The article is based on an issue that many organisations are discussing - what role does social licence have in fiture proofing organisations

Your focus is to understand the key management issues highlighted in the article and organise and summarise this information to meet the stated objectives - providing your colleagues with a summary of what the topic is about , why it might be important for your organisation and what to expecty in your session at the planning day.

References & Sources

This assessment is not prescriptive on the number of references you need to use, the focus is on synthesizing the information in the article and applying business writing skills.

Your Lectures have provided you with guidance and as a general guide you should look at between 2 and 5 references. The article is the primary source, the article also also links to other articles, these are provided as additional resources only, you are not required to use these article. You will find the Text and the content of Week One's workshop provide a good background to the key concept of forces tat are affecting the future of work.

You will note that as you progress in this unit we place more emphasis on academic referencing and in Assessment Three we prescribe 10 sources.

2. Demonstrate the application of your written communication skills, using appropriate document structure and writing style.

The second component requires you to structure the Memo Report in a way that informs and engages your audience. You should use the intra-organisational communication guidelines/tools provided in Week Two of this unit and reference the making critical outlined in the Rubric Attachment A.

You need to demonstrate the application of your writing skills ensuring appropriate structure, tone ans style.
