JOB SUMMARY

The House Supervisor oversees the staffing and assignment of work functions for the Department of Nursing; coordinates the processing of all requests made to UW Health (including American Family Children’s Hospital and The American Center) by internal and external sources for actual or potential inpatient placement or for clinically complex outpatient services; and provides general supervisory and administrative assistance to the nursing units. The House Supervisor acts collaboratively as a resource and liaison between the Department of Nursing and the Access Center, Admissions, Surgical Services, Emergency Department, Outpatient Surgery, Ambulatory Procedure Center, Cath Lab, and Radiology to coordinate and facilitate staffing resources to support the placement of patients to appropriate units.

The House Supervisor has expertise in acute care criteria for inpatient hospitalization, detailed knowledge of the scope of practice of each UW Health nursing unit and a working knowledge of operations, policies and procedures. Knowledge of sound nursing practice, overall hospital administration, emergency management, crisis intervention, conflict resolution, negotiation, and delegation are essential to effective performance.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Work in conjunction with the Nursing Resource Center staff to coordinate staffing resources with patient care needs.

  2. Work collaboratively with department leadership (managers, providers and CTLs/STMs) to enhance operational efficiency and optimize the delivery of care.

  1. Assist in prioritization in resource utilization. Refer complex situations to VP for Medical Affairs, CNO(s), Nursing Administrator on-call, and/or Hospital Administrator on-call when necessary.

  2. Collaborate with physicians, inpatient staff, and admissions staff on medical necessity issues and determination of appropriate level of care.

  1. Arrange for patients and visitors to receive special services, such as counseling, clergy services, etc. during the off hours.

  2. Address problems and conflicts which arise between patients, families and healthcare providers and provide appropriate support and service recovery.

  1. Provide supervision to the nursing staff and function as an expert nursing resource.

  1. Provide guidance and feedback in relation to staff performance and policy adherence.

  2. Provide in the moment support to new orientees, agency and/or per diem staff and charge nurses so that they are able to carry out their responsibilities with expertise and confidence.

  3. Evaluate patient conditions as requested and help staff problem solve clinical issues, serving as a coach for chain of command in the absence of the nursing unit leadership.

  1. Function as a role model for staff with regard to investment in own professional development.
