Chemistry – States of matter
Matter is everywhere on the earth. The three main states of matter found on earth are known as solids, liquids and gases. Most of the materials exist on the earth is a one type of states of matter. You can distinguish states of matter based on their properties. Now plasma is a fourth type of states of matter. Plasma is totally different from solid, liquid or gas properties.
You can look how four important states of matter are different from each-other.
Solids:
The solid material has fixed shape and volume. The common examples are wood, metals (steel bar), solid water (ice), glass, rock and minerals.
Liquids:
Liquid takes the shape of its container, no tendency to disperse and has a definite volume. Examples are water, oil, milk, fruits juice, mineral oil and gasoline.
Gases:
In physical chemistry, gas does not resist change of shape and will expand indefinitely fill the space available. In physical state gas has no fixed volume and shape. Examples of gases are Oxygen (O2), Hydrogen (H2), Nitrogen (N2) Helium (He), Methane (CH4), and Ethane (C2H6).
Plasma:
A very high energy like (thermal, electrical, and ultraviolet light) is needed to strip electrons from atoms to make plasma. Plasma contains ionize charged particles and these particles are positive ions, negative electrons or ions. Plasma like gas does not have a definite shape or a definite volume unless enclosed in a container. Plasma is electrically neutral medium of positive (+ive) and negative (-ive) electrons or ions.
In chemistry, plasma is the most common state of matter. Examples are sun, stars, fluorescent lights, and fire (lighting). For industrial uses plasma is generated in chemistry laboratory.
