Theorems On Moment Of Inertia
(i) Parallel axis theorem
“M.I. of a body about an axis is equal to the sum of M.I. about a parallel axis passing through its C.M. and product of mass and distance between two axis”.
\
Note: Given two axis must be parallel to each other, one passing through the C.M.
(ii) Perpendicular axis theorem
This theorem is applied only for laminar bodies.
“M.I. of a body about an axis perpendicular to the plane of the body is equal to the sum of M.I. about two perpendicular axis in the plane of the body all three axis being mutually perpendicular & concurrent”
\
Note:x-axis and y-axis must lie in the plane of the plane and z-axis perpendicular to the plane all three being concurrent.
