There are two types of dihalides namely gem (or germinal) dihalides in which the two halogen atoms are attached to the same carbon atom and vic. (or vicinal) dihalides in which the the two halogen atoms are attached to the adjacent carbon atoms.

The reaction mechanism involves loss of the two halogen atoms in two steps. The two halogen atoms align themselves at 180° and in the same plane before they are lost.
