Central Europe, 1789-1918: Empires, Nations, States
Central Europe, sometimes referred to as Middle Europe or Median Europe, is a region of the European continent lying between the variously defined areas of Eastern and Western Europe. Widespread interest in the region and the term itself resurfaced by the end of the Cold War, which had divided Europe politically into East and West, splitting Central Europe in half. This subject examines the development of nationalism and socialism as ideologies intended to shape group loyalties, public and private behaviour and political activities of subjects of the continental European empires in the long nineteenth century. Primary focus is on the Habsburg Empire and attention is paid to other German-speaking lands and to the western territories of the Russian Empire.
