A Report to Olympic Funding Sample Assignment
A report to Olympic Funding for UK
Introduction
This report is on Olympic funding summary of the UK by the country’s Sports Board, which has provided all previous funding for the participants in the Olympic. In this report, we have examined cost of funding for Olympic Games since Sydney 2000 to Rio 2016 to understand the nature of expenses. Further, total expenses of games have been investigated for each game separately for all this years. The report has also documented expenses of each game for
Tokyo 2020 separately to understand the nature of cost as well as importance of each game.
In this report, we can find that various costs of games are not present in Tokyo or in other
Olympics due to either unavailability of participants or absent of that game in a specific Olympic.
Statistical measures
The statistical calculations on expenses of Olympic Games have shown that the highest funds have been invested for rowing on an average of the last five years. Athletics has received the second highest fund for the entire period on an average basis. It is clear that average funding amount depends on numbers of participants in each game. Rowing and athletics divisions have sent the maximum numbers of players to every game. However, we have witnessed discrepancy in per participant expense in some segments. Hockey division has sent more players in every game, but cycling, canoeing, swimming and sailing have received more par participant funds. It is observed that board has provided more fund for team oriented sports in Olympics where more amount is provided for Athlete performance award than that of individual sports. The statistical analysis has indicated huge variance as well as standard deviation of expense of every individual category. It is because expenses of Sydney and Athens Olympics are too low. In these two Olympics, sports council used to fund podium level expenses as responsibility of council was to support development and talent level activities (Uksport.gov.uk, 2017). Thereby, total funds allocated for first two Olympics were low and it has enhanced deviation high during the period of analysis. The deviation is higher for those sports where UK has sent participants for all the Olympics. However, the analysis shows that archery has the lowest deviation in which council has sent participants in all the Olympics. However, council has not provided any fund for archery in Tokyo 2020. The quartile range shows different types of mean of the investments. The first quartile range provides mean of lowest investments whereas third quartile provides mean of the highest levels of funds during the period (Kolaczyk and Csárdi, 2014). The difference between 1st and 3rd quartile indicates difference and range of funds provided by council for the last five Olympics. In this context, fund allocated for sailing shows the highest difference in this period indicating increase in investment for this sport. It also has indicted that sailing has achieved higher level of importance and popularity in the country (Little and Rubin, 2014). Further, it is also observed that apart from Taekwondo, no sport has mode value due to different expenses of different years. The range of expenses has shown that funds have been allocated more in Rio Olympic as maximum amount is allocated in this Olympic. The comparison of mean amount of fund allocation shows that Taekwondo and Triathlon have attracted the highest and second highest level of funds. The percentage increase to fund these sports for Tokyo 2020 has crossed more than 80% of mean fund has allocated in last five years. Further, rowing has witnessed significant level of fund increase for the next Olympic.
Conclusion
The report has analysed fund allocation for all types of sports in Olympic by spots council of UK. The previous allocations as well as future allocation in the game have been compared to understand the importance of types of sports for the council. Further, it is also understood that council has started to provide importance to less popular sports like Taekwondo and triathlon.
Report 2
The above scatter plot of medals in different sports is constructed for last three Olympics – 2008, 2012 and 2016. The success of cycling is continuous during the period taking the leading position in medal distribution. Rowing took second position in 2012, but it failed to continue its glorious performance in Rio Olympic. In Rio, athletics and gymnastics divisions
– both have shared second place with respect to total medal winning. Gymnastics and
Athletics have shown continuous improvement in medal-winning in the last three Olympic Games for the country. Similar pattern of improvement is observed in swimming and taekwondo segments as these sports have provided 9 medals in the last Olympic. Further, remarkable improvement is observed in tennis section as this sport has won a medal for the country without having any funding. However, performance of boxing has deteriorated in Rio as only three medals were managed in this sport.

In the above table, we can see that cycling, rowing and sailing – all are negatively correlated with respect to past funds and number of medal won in the tournament. The following table shows that similar correlation is present for swimming and athletics. However, athletics division has increased total numbers of winning, but the number is not sufficient compared to amount vested in it during the period. Canoeing has positive correlation due to stable performance and regular increase in fund.

The above table indicates that boxing and equestrian have positive correlation whereas modern pentathlon is negatively correlated with amount vested during last three Olympics. Therefore, it is advisable to council to concentrate on other games, which are promising to obtain medals for the country instead of incurring expense of £6649932 for pentathlon. Council must look after gymnastics, taekwondo and diving more as these three games have strong correlations with amount of funds and number of medals won by the participants throughout last three summers.

Shooting, Hockey and Judo do not provide such comparable result regarding fund vested and number of medals. However, triathlon has shown promising result in contributing total medals of the country in Rio. It has the maximum correlation due to well performance in last three Olympics.

The correlational analysis can predict future medal winning in Tokyo by sports people of the UK. The positive correlation of more than 0.7 must win medals on pro rate basis for the country. In those sports, country might witness to have development in performance. However, the sports having negative correlation might not provide any improvement in achieving number of medals. However, athletics might prove prediction incorrect as potential of British athletics cannot be estimated with such small negative correlation (Varmuza and Filzmoser, 2016).
